COMMUNITY PSYCHIATRIC NURSE

St Helena Island, South Atlantic

3 years FTC available immediately

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The 28-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.

In this vital role you will own a caseload of patients who have complex and substantial mental health needs. As a member of the Community Mental Health Team you will ensure high quality individualised care that promotes recovery and maximises independence.

Offering evidence-based treatment for mental health problems you will perform patient risk assessments and provide person-centred care. You will liaise with doctors, allied health professionals and other agencies as you monitor patients and conduct care planning and review. You must identify those whose needs fall outside of established mental health clinical pathways and also apply short term psychological interventions with appropriate therapies.

You will assess elderly patients, patients with substance misuse problems and detainees in police custody. You will also monitor detoxification programmes and provide longer term support/treatment. As you conduct mental health promotion including presentations, media interviews and public information articles, you will utilise your high level interpersonal and communication skills to promote and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients, their family and carers. You will be expected to be on call at least one week in three, out of hours and weekends as required.

A UK Registered Level 1 Mental Health Nurse or equivalent, you have dual qualification RGN/RMN and post registration experience as a Community Psychiatric Nurse or in a community based team. You must maintain registration with your professional nursing association (NMC or equivalent). You can undertake independent clinical decision making.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.  As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
