RADIOLOGY SISTER /CHARGE NURSE – Imaging

Location: The Princess Grace Hospital, 42-52 Nottingham Pl, London W1U 5NY

This role is a 37.5 hours per week + rotational on-call.

Unit open Monday-Friday from 8:00-20:00, with additional evening and weekend on call.

Job Description

The Radiology Sister/Charge Nurse will report to the Clinical Lead Nurse/Manager and will provide a supplementary leadership to the nursing team, keeping Departmental and hospital objectives in focus.

This role will require you to supervise, manage and develop the nursing team in line with the direction of the Lead Nurse. Facilitate the on-going professional development of newly appointed staff, junior or less experienced Nurses, Imaging Assistants and Student Nurses in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

You will have delegated responsibility for the management of the clinical areas including assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards on a shift basis and in the authorised absence of the Lead Nurse

The Charge Nurse will participate in innovation and evidence - based nursing practice through professional leadership and supporting the clinical team in close liaison with the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse and the Senior Staff Nurse for Quality.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Act as a clinical expert within Interventional Radiology & Diagnostic Imaging nursing. Assist and advice staff, both registered and unregistered in the delivery of patient care within imaging modalities.
  • Possess a broad professional knowledge base and comprehensive experience of IR and Imaging nursing.
  • Able to carry out planned care for a group of patients without supervision.
  • Assess, plan and implement the complete care of the conscious or conscious-sedated patient. Ensure the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of evidence based, individualised patient care.
  • You will be expected join the team in providing emergency out of hours care as part of an on- call rota. This will include care for both general and Interventional procedures
  • Oversee and be actively involved in scrubbing up and assisting interventional practitioners during radiological procedures.
  • Plan, organise and deploy staff according to ability and workload in order to meet patient needs.
  • Ensure that nursing practices comply with Trust policies and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively at all times to improve the patient experience and maintain a 
harmonious-working environment.
  • Assist the Lead Nurse in compiling duty rotas and be responsible for 
arranging adequate staff cover and in the monitoring of sickness and absence levels.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the economical use of resources and contribute to the overall control of the ward or departmental budget and identify areas where cost improvements can be made.
  • Supports the team during interventional radiology cases in x-ray, CT, ultrasound and MRI.
  • Assist in the development of IR & Imaging nursing orientation program and act as a facilitator or mentor or preceptor to new joiners or junior staff or student nurses during their placement. Act as a supervisor and assessor.
  • The post holder will demonstrate the skills for assessing and interpreting specialist acute and other patient conditions, initiating actions as appropriate.
  • Supports the Radiology department by providing a high standard of care for both in-patients and outpatient including assisting the team and Radiographers in the booking of immediate appointments.
  • Contribute to the principles of clinical governance, ensuring that quality standards are set and monitored. Ensure that clinical risk management and clinical audit are an integral part and carried out.
  • Form an effective working relationship with Consultants, Radiographers and administrative staff within the department and the hospital as a whole.
  • Provide a professional standard of excellence in nursing services for all patients.

Skills & Experience

  • Hold a BSc (or equivalent) in Nursing and with minimum 3 years post registration experience to include 2 years experience in Interventional radiology with current UK NMC registration meeting PREP requirements.
  • Post Graduate qualification within imaging or formal Leadership Management training or equivalent experience.
  • Have experience in mentoring, teaching qualification or equivalent and with good written and verbal communication skills. Teaching knowledge of imaging nursing.
  • Strong organisational skills working across many modalities.
